4-digits is faster, and it auto-locks your app after 3 failed attempts and forces a 5-minute wait between subsequent attempts. We used this system to get the best security combined with the best usability.
And to clarify any confusion - the 4 digits are not what is used for the encryption key. A much stronger and longer string is used for AES-256 encryption, and it's unique to each user.
